]]>Planning a dream trip? Packing can be a nightmare, but here are a few tips on how to pack less and still look like a fashion icon using eco-friendly solutions.
]]>You are going on a dream holiday, far, far away. There’s always one looming question: what to pack? Okay, maybe a few more: how do I fit my whole closet into my not-so-big suitcase? How do I travel in style if I have a limited luggage allowance? Do I need another dress? And so on...
If you’ve ever asked yourself any of these questions, I have you covered. Stay calm, take a deep breath, and keep reading. Gone are the days of packing everything you own and outfit frustration.
Packing can be a hassle. We all know this to be true. The solution is actually simple - plan in advance. The process doesn’t have to take forever, and if you know what you’re doing it can actually be quite fun.
Don’t know how? Here are a few tips on how to avoid packing related stress, travel in style, and enjoy yourself during your holiday. All at the same time.
It will be much easier if you pick a color palette and stick to it. You will be able to match any top with any bottom if they are in similar color tones. Think universal. Think which colors go well together and keep your travel closet in that color scheme. None of the colors will contrast too much and you can mix and match as you wish. You can read more about it here.
If you’re struggling, here is a pro tip:
Whites, beiges, blues, and pastels complement each other well. They look great in beach surroundings, forests, and cityscapes. What’s more, brighter colors are generally better for warm temperatures. They reflect the sunlight, unlike dark colors which absorb the light. Result: You will travel in style, but you won’t get too hot which allows you to survive longer in that warm sunny destination you’ve been dreaming of.
As mentioned before, don’t be afraid to “recycle” your pieces. Mix and match them with each other to create new outfits. Look at it this way: if you pack three different tops and three bottoms, that makes nine completely different outfits. Simple as that. 💁
Same top, different bottoms - I don’t want anyone to notice!
Don’t worry, there is a lot you can do with just one T-shirt. You can let it loose, tie it up, wear it as a dress, roll the sleeves up, tuck it into your pants or skirt, throw on a jacket, etc. No one will notice that it’s the exact same item you were wearing the day before. It's our little secret. To travel in style don’t be afraid to be your own stylist and get creative! Want some inspiration? Pinterest is your best friend, and you can follow us too!
If you plan your outfits ahead, you will avoid disappointment and the daily “what to wear” stress. Yes, we all know this one too well. You can also pack your clothes pre-arranged in outfits. Take your ready-to-wear outfit out of the suitcase and thank yourself for packing in advance. Can you think of anything more convenient?
Research the area you’re going to
Check out places you would like to sightsee and see what is okay and what is not okay to wear there. Many cultures have dress codes that are different from your own and you don’t want to be THAT tourist, yes, we are talking about the one walking around everywhere in a bikini. Parts of Bali are pretty chill, but there are some unwritten rules.
You can also research colors or designs that would look complementary with the surroundings. This way, besides traveling in style, you will look great in the pictures! #InstaWorthy
It’s better to pack fewer but better quality and more stylish pieces, than to pack a lot of whatever ‘just in case’ items. You know you look fantastic in these pieces and paired together they make memorable outfits. Plus, it will all go on the pictures, so you better make sure you look stunning.
Let’s face it - you will be probably running around in one pair of flipflops every day. So if you already took a few more pairs from your closet, put them back in. You essentially need to pack one pair of open toe shoes and one pair of sneakers, for waterfall walks and so on. The rest can stay at home and wait for you to be back. You will save a lot of space and extra weight in your luggage. PS. No need to take heels - heels are a big no no.
Packing cubes will help you save a lot of space and organize luggage. No more sitting on your suitcase trying to zip it. Remember tip number 3? Here, packing cubes come in real handy. You can arrange your outfits by days and keep similar tops and bottoms that match together. Less mess and no more tears while looking for a “missing” T-shirt or a dress.
Extra tip: do a mini tidying up before you leave your room, this way you won’t leave anything behind.
And if you’re still thinking: what if I need one more dress or one more cute top? Ask yourself - what would Marie Kondo do?
Marie Kondo is a Japanese organizing consultant. She came up with a popular method of organizing called KonMari. You just need to ask yourself if each item “sparks joy” and if you will actually be happy wearing it. You can easily apply it to your packing regime
Lastly, YOU CAN DO IT! With just a bit of preparation, packing can turn into a fun styling session. Be strict with yourself, take a step back and pack only the essentials. Once again, minimalism for the win. If you need a classic accessory for adventures, check out my sustainable handbag collection. We just launched the new RESORT collection. The neutral colors and timeless styles will match any outfit!
Happy travels! Hopefully, these tips will help you travel in style and stress free. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact me.

]]>What if we could give the planet, and ourselves, a break for 24 hours? Imagine... No light. No working. No talking. No phones. No internet. No cars. No one outside. That’s what’s happening in Bali for Nyepi each year.
Can’t believe it? It’s real. In Saka, the Balinese lunar calendar, Nyepi is New Year’s Day - a sacred day. It’s possibly the most iconic Balinese tradition.
Nyepi is a day to cleanse the island from evil spirits and give Mother Nature a rest. One day out of 365 without human activity.
In 2020, the holiday begins at 6 a.m. on March 25 and ends at 6 a.m. on March 26 - sunrise to sunrise.
It’s a good time to be in Bali as it’s the end of the rainy season, which is usually from October to March.
You can enjoy an “in-between” beautiful period; the busy season hasn’t started yet, and the weather is most likely pleasant.
“So wait… What is Nyepi day like for tourists? Can I still enjoy Bali? Will there be any restrictions during my vacation?”
Some tourists will find that ritual fantastic, and dive deep into the cultural side of the island. Others will totally panic and wonder how to survive. It’s ok. We got you.
The first thing is understanding what you can still do, and what you’re not allowed to do. Once you know the rules during Nyepi, you can plan properly and figure out how to enjoy the day.
The Day of Silence only lasts for 24 hours. For Hindus, Nyepi means strictly no work, no electricity, no traveling, no entertainment. As tourists, you need to respect the traditions and make sure you are following the rules. Here are the main rules for Nyepi:
Stay inside
Villagers and tourist guides say bad spirits are supposed to think Bali has been abandoned.
No one is allowed out on the streets or on the beach during Nyepi. The “Pecalang” - local security guards - are outside to make sure the tradition is respected.
Stay confined to the grounds of your hotel!
Shops are closedShops, restaurants, and offices are shut down.
Everything, from the smallest mini mart to the biggest office, is not functioning. So make sure you have whatever you need for a day at home!
No vehicles allowedOnly emergency vehicles are allowed to operate, other motorcycles and cars are not allowed on the road. It’s a great restriction which also benefits the planet: less consumption of gas and energy, leading to lower pollution levels!
Phone and internet connectionLocal TV stations shut down, but phone and internet connection for both landlines and wireless stay on.
You can continue using your devices as usual if you need to. Just make sure you’re not visible from the outside!
Airport is closedNgurah Rai International Airport ceases its activity - there is no way to fly in or out of Bali on that day.
Have you ever heard of a whole airport freezing services for twenty-four hours each year?! Now yes.
Non-Hindu residents and tourists are not exempt from the restrictions. Although they are free to do as they wish inside their hotels, it’s best to honor the sacred day making by making minimum noise or light.
“Ok. Got it. But what can I do for Nyepi 2020? How do I embrace this Balinese tradition?”
Watch traditional Balinese celebrations on Nyepi’s eve
The evening before is all noise and celebration.
“Ogoh-ogoh” are giant papier-mâché effigies that are creatively built and burnt to ward off demons. At dark, locals loudly carry it through villages to an open field burning. They hold bamboo light torches, emphasizing dramatic effect.
That parade symbolizes the exorcism. And yes, it’s a pretty impressive ritual to watch.
Enjoy a screen-free day
How about time for self-reflection? Nowadays we all spend too much time on our phones, TV, and computers. Nyepi is a great moment to turn off your devices and recharge. Chill, read a book, meditate, do yoga. Reflect on the past year. Enjoy the day of silence on your own and stargaze.
It’s the best day of the year in Bali to watch the most immersive night sky. The brightest stars are shining, with zero light pollution.
Spend quality time with your loved onesFor those who cringe at the thought of silence and inactivity, plan a Nyepi day sleepover! Invite your friends, stock up some snacks, and watch some old movies. Play cards. Is there a better moment for long, deep conversations?
Get a full-day treatment at your hotelYou have to stay indoors, so let’s get pampered! Most hotels offer Nyepi day packages. A relaxing holiday in Indonesia isn’t complete anyway without a spa day! Check out our tips for the best spa hotels in Bali.
Go to another islandIf after all, you really don’t think that you can survive Nyepi day, or if you think you’d rather not waste a single day in your room for Nyepi on your seven-day vacation in Bali - here are tons of non-Hindu islands to visit in Indonesia.
Escape to the Gili islands, and enjoy the clear blue lagoon beaches sipping a cocktail! That’s also a great place for scuba diving, so it’s worth checking out.
So yes, Bali, the super popular vacation destination, falls dead silent for 24 hours on Nyepi day. But there are a million ways to experience this beautiful tradition. What will be yours?

]]>Lush paradise, incredible sunsets, cliff-top venues and one of a kind shopping options. Sounds like a cliche? Call it Bali, or the place to be. Either way, the uniqueness of this tropical island presents itself in many forms. The local shopping options are definitely one of them. Indonesia is an inspiration by itself, where creativity meets passion for fashion, art and design. So ladies, if this is your vibe, let's talk [some serious shopping] business. Ready?
Shopping Paradise
Over the past few years, Bali has been reaching sky-high when it comes to shopping options. Not just a beautiful piece of natural paradise, but also a vibrant mecca for shopaholics. The streets of Canggu and Seminyak offer a variety of local and international brands at trendy markets, boutiques and bazaars. And forget shopping malls!
Did you know that you can take shopping tours in Bali? Now hand on heart, what more could fashionistas and clothes-crazed individuals dream of?
No doubt Indonesians are very talented with a strong background of skilled craftsmanship. Now if you combine locally handcrafted products with affordable prices, it is truly every shopper's dream.
Market Tradition
Markets feel like a cultural icon for Balinese people. It's a daily occasion where shopping meets socialising, gossiping and brings communities together. They are a symbol of everyday Balinese lifestyle.
And now the expat community has brought their own market traditions to the island. Bringing western and local style together creates a unique culture at weekend markets. You will be blown away by everything they offer! That’s why we love them oh-so-much.
Things To Know Beforehand
Before you decide to take part in this shopping adventure, read the following tips. Your closet and wallet will thank you.
The language barrier is something you don't have to stress about. The locals are very accommodating to travellers with basic knowledge of English. Otherwise simple hand signals and asking ‘how much?’ will get you through negotiation.
It's natural you will be looking for price tags when shopping around. Don't be surprised if you can't find any. You’re in for some bargaining! And don't be shy to negotiate. Ask for the ‘morning price’ if you get there early, ‘afternoon price’ if it’s later than 3 pm. If all else fails, ask for a price that locals get, by dropping the line 'Saya minta harga local'. The stallholders are used to it. You are more likely to cut the price down by 20% - 40%. Some are more aggressive sellers than others, and even an eye towards an item will get them trying to sell to you.
Where Should You Go Shopping?
The most sought after markets in Bali are located in Canggu, Seminyak and Ubud. However, they vary in products. In the area of Canggu, you will find trendy hipster style markets and upmarket boutiques. Seminyak offers bartering street stalls and cool boutique options. Markets in Ubud sell mostly artisan made products from locals living nearby.
While most things are quite cheap, apart from boutiques, keep in mind it takes time to create each product. This can sometimes make determining a fair price hard while bargaining. Even if you pay a few more dollars, you still got a good deal gal.
Love Anchor Market
Canggu, hipster district of Bali, offers an exciting selection of markets and bazaars. Monday to Sunday, 9 am to 9 pm, calls for Love Anchor, one of Canggu's most photogenic markets! This unique bazaar is a complex of shops, pop-up stalls, bars and restaurants attracting hipster crowds of Canggu streets. Their dreamy fairy light decor enhances its street tropical style and funky atmosphere.

Old Man's Market
Keep the last Sunday of each month open to attend another hip market at Old Man's in Canggu. With up to 150 stalls, it might become your new monthly affair. Quirky Old Man's stalls sell literally everything. From boho style jewellery, fun beachwear, and artwork to baked goods and organic skincare.
This market gives you a feeling of community. Creating new connections with people or catching up with old friends. It is also a place where all the startups and small businesses hang out.
Samadi Organic Market
The most local Canggu market, Samadi, opens its gate every Sunday at 9 am and runs until 2 pm. The main focus is on organic produce from local farmers, fresh fruit and vegetables. And many more! Imagine hot homemade scones, fresh seafood, quirky accessories, Bali bikini or lifestyle products. Also spices, goat milk and the most delicious local Jamu, an Indonesian health tonic. It is a powerful liquid herbal medicine made from turmeric. So damn-licious! A real organic paradise!
Biasa+ Eccentric Art Space Market
Now it's time to appreciate some art. Oh, and good pies! You can't skip Seminyak's art space, Biasa+. Mark your calendar for every second Saturday. This famous art space transforms into a bazaar square in the gallery's yard. If you appreciate good art and tasty hot pies, you are in the right place. Did we mention the sushi corner and perfectly-brewed coffee? Overall, this is a different sort of market that showcases art in all forms.
Ubud Art Market
Ubud markets are a paradise for handcrafted products sourced from the surrounding local villages. Located opposite the Royal Ubud Palace, right in the heart of Ubud. It's a perfect place to stock up on artisan-quality gifts before you head back home. To snap up the best deals, get there in the morning.
Garage Sales And Flea Markets
Western-style garage sales are quite new to Bali and flea-style markets are starting to take over the island. .Unfortunately, there are no set locations. The best place to hear about them are through expat Facebook groups, like “The Bali Expats” and “Bali Unlimited”. The only event which runs on a regular schedule is set in cafe 'Drop. The Coffee Spot' in Seminyak area. This garage sale event happens on the last Sunday of the month. You can score clothes, shoes, books, jewellery or cool household items.
Boutique Shopping
Did you know that you can sometimes negotiate with local boutiques? You can't expect market price drop, but they are often willing to go down in price. Even fancy shops in Seminyak's Petitenget and Oberoi streets. At least it's always worth a try. But don't try to haggle over a price in high-end and western branded boutiques or outlets.
If you are after unique shopping experience, 'Bali Boat Shed' will meet your needs. It is a concept store showcasing Bali's best brands. The unique range of apparel, jewellery, accessories and homeware products are their vibe. Our personal favourite!
Alongside local Bali brands, the store stocks over 40 independent designer labels. Sabia, a modern regional designer, is a label worth mentioning. Characteristically for its modern minimalistic design made of tie-dye or ikat fabric. A bit on the pricier side, but worth to have a look. Imagine wide-leg silk pants, silk dresses and underwear.
Market Shopping Vs. Boutique Shopping
The question is, markets or boutiques? Markets are always a smart choice. Money-wise and eco-wise. Think of them as unicorns. You are likely to get rare and unique items for almost half the price of boutique shopping. On top of that, you advocate for sustainable design. So stay eco-conscious and don't throw away an opportunity for green bargain shopping.]]>You are planning to travel to Bali. Hand on your heart, who doesn't love Bali? It is a lush green paradise with endless options for adventure. It is an island where you can truly immerse yourself in the local culture and have an authentic experience.
Have you ever stopped and considered how to make your travels more sustainable?
Every year millions of travelers visit Bali and leave their marks behind. While over 5.5 million tourists reached Bali in 2017, the number of travelers in 2018 increased to 6.5 million. Due to this sudden increase and the obvious impact it has on the environment, there are more conscious practices that need to be put into action. Traveling sustainably means leaving a positive impact on the environment and the locals.
The good news is that being an eco-conscious traveler is actually much easier than you may think and it all starts with awareness. Let us be your eco-style guide and help you cut down your environmental impact.
Living a sustainable lifestyle has been promoted for a few decades now, and you can check our guide to a sustainable closet here. The good news is the eco-lifestyle is becoming trendy and society is starting to pay closer attention to ethical practices. Unfortunately, for most travelers, the only way to reach the 'Island of Gods' is by airplane. This mode of transportation causes heavy air pollution.
While this reality is unfortunate, there are things we can be aware of and practice to be better. Here are our eco-friendly travel tips.
Plan your trip to minimize carbon emission.
Become a slow traveler. Consider taking longer yet fewer holidays to go the long haul to a dream-worthy destination. Flying over to the ‘Island of Gods' for a longer time is better for both the environment and yourself. Put your feet up, relax and soak up the beauty of the island.
When searching for a flight, look for airlines with 'green' options. Instead of booking a long haul flight with transfers, try to get a direct one.
Pack light. You are going to a tropical island, you won't need your entire wardrobe. You can check our guide on how to pack less while still looking stylish here. Remember that the heavier your suitcase is, the more fuel is used! Another option is to travel ultra-light, so you can support the local economy by buying things in Bali. With all the cute boutiques and artisan made goods, this is my preferred option!
Pack items that are respectful to local culture and religious traditions. Yes, bring your shorts and tops, but wear them appropriately. You wouldn’t show up in cutoff shorts and a crop top while visiting a church, so why would you do it at a temple? If you dress suitably, locals will treat you with more respect.
Have you booked your place yet? Hold off until you read this. Bali offers a range of eco options from luxurious villas to basic home stays. Whatever you choose, make sure they promote sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and local economy.
Have a villa in mind? Spend a few nights in an eco-villa booked via Villa-Bali.com. Not only will it be a unique place to stay but by far more sustainable than your average resort or hotel. Why?
By booking accommodation with Villa-Bali.com you are doing a favor to the environment. Besides promoting ethical practices, this organization is part of ‘ReforestAction’. For each villa rented, they plant one mangrove tree in the north of Sumatra. This planting process helps protect the rainforest from being destroyed for the palm oil industry. Thumbs up for this sustainable movement. 👍 A great contribution to the sustainable vacation landscape.
Did we mention villas are set in the heart of Bali’s raw natural beauty? Sustainability and luxury can go hand in hand.
So you have your flight and accommodation sorted. Now you move onto the details, because they matter. Packing. Here is some functional and beauty advice to fill your mind and suitcase.
1. Learn a few basic words and phrases. It makes interaction with locals easier and more authentic. Try the FREE Duolingo language app for 10-15 minutes a day and show up with the basics down.
2. Stock up on eco-friendly cosmetic products. Products like organic biodegradable shampoo or deodorant, come in bars. Opt for a sunscreen that’s gentle to the environment. Avoid those with harmful ingredients such as oxybenzone, which kills and bleaches coral reefs. Sun Bum is a personal favorite.
3. Say bye to plastic bottles and cotton pads. Amazon offers a microfibre makeup removal cloth which is great for travel! Swing by a local zero-waste store to see what other travel goodies they have that serve both your needs and the environments.
Following the 3 eco-friendly travel tips are a great place to start!
Cutting down on meat and dairy is an essential step towards a better future. The plant-based food industry uses less water and land than traditional farming industries. Going organic, vegan or vegetarian acts eco-consciously towards both the environment and your health. Consumption of local fruits and vegetables gives back to the community and supports local business. In Bali, this is easy and the most delicious option.
Bali is a perfect place to dive into these ethical and sustainable dining practices. Places like Bali Buddha, Eat Clear, Cashew Tree, Alchemy or Sari Organik are a must-visit.
If you are a meat eater, fear not. Same. However, I've been focused on cutting back on my meat intake and when traveling in Bali, there are endless delicious options. I eat clean without even realizing it. Win!
Calling out all shopaholics. Shopping in Bali is awesome. It can be a real sustainable fashion paradise. If you fancy local bags, dresses, jewelry or souvenirs, Bali is the right place to be. Sadly, a large amount of 'Balinese' handmade products were made in China. To make sure your product is Balinese, buy straight from local indigenous artisans. This way you are also giving something back to the island and locals.
When in Canggu, go for a Sunday stroll and visit the Samadi Organic Sunday Market. You will find great local made products. Markets are held every Sunday from 9 am to 2 pm. If you get there in the morning, you can rely on healthy organic breakfast options. The atmosphere is very relaxed with a mix of expats, locals, tourists and kids.
Apart from markets, there are many sustainable product options. Bali is big on bamboo products, which are much more sustainable than cotton. There is plenty of bamboo in Bali. It requires only a little water and grows fast. We only use renewable resources in our products...which now includes bamboo!
Don't miss out on the brand Bambooku for clothes, sheets and towels made from 100% bamboo, the world’s most sustainable crop. This is what we call guilt-free shopping.
Bali announced a ban on single-use plastic in 2019. To start, supermarkets have stopped offering plastic bags. Win! However, as this is a recent ban, you will still see large amounts of single-use plastic being used on a daily basis. So let's aim to be the change we wish to see in the world...
BYO_
A sustainable traveler is a person who leaves as little carbon footprint behind as possible and shows respect for the local culture and environment. They ensure that their choice of activities, food and accommodation are as eco-friendly as possible.
Research and choose consciously how to get to a destination, what activities to join, and where to spend your money. Acting eco-consciously is actually not that hard. Where there is a will, there is a way.
]]>Let’s share some facts. The world is facing problems derived from climate change. A big part of the world’s pollution is caused by single used plastic, but also industries such as food and fashion are big contributors to the problem. According to National Geographic, around 18 billion pounds of plastic waste enter the world’s ocean each year.
“That’s equivalent to five grocery bags, full of plastic trash, sitting on every foot of coastline.”
You are now probably thinking: ‘I want to make a change’, which is good, but now you have to ask yourself: ‘how?’. Most people simply don’t know where to start, but don’t panic, changing your lifestyle into a more sustainable one is like going onto a healthy diet: It's all about making smart substitutions, good habits, and not having to say ‘no’ to your favorite dessert. 😉 Do you want to improve your own lifestyle and also contribute to positive environmental change? Here is a short guide on how to start.
Nowadays, the number of places actually banning single-use plastic is growing bigger and bigger. However, better to be safe than sorry, right?
Single-use straws have been marked as the main evil in the past few years since they seem to have taken over the world. The USA alone was using over 500 million straws every day in 2016. That’s a lot of trash, isn’t it?
Can’t picture it?
That’s enough straws to make a circle around the Earth 2.5 times. Thankfully, a year later the number was reduced to 390 million straws per day due to Freedonia Group. That’s a massive change, but, is it enough?
One way to contribute is by carrying our own reusable straws made out of bamboo or stainless steel. You can get them on Amazon or eBay for even as little as $4 for a set of 10 straws. Even better, you can look for them in the local store to support small businesses and reduce the carbon footprint caused by transportation.
Another easy change is to always carry a reusable cloth bag, or a few, in your purse, so whenever you decide to go shopping, you’re ready and don’t need to ask for a single-use plastic bag.
The fashion industry is actually one of the major polluting industries in the world. What can you do?
1.- Shop locally and look for good quality products that will stay with you for a long time.
2.- Buy clothes and accessories made from ecological and sustainable fabrics.
3.- Swap items. You can take part in local clothes swap where you can exchange the items you don’t want to wear anymore for new items. Don’t tell me it’s not a win-win situation. 😉 Getting rid of all the stuff that clutters your closet and getting some new pieces in.
There are a few aspects to consider in order to be gentle to the environment. The first one to consider in regards to sustainability is slow fashion. It focuses on choosing garments made of sustainable materials and with higher quality so that they will last longer so there won’t be a need to keep buying more. If you missed our blog post explaining the slow fashion movement in detail, you can still find it here.
If you worry about fashion accessories that are both beautiful but also good for the environment, you can check my brand Shop Jenn Lee. We make amazing bags made out of natural renewable resources such as ata grass, which will last you a lifetime. 😉
You can help the planet by reducing meat and dairy, as well as by shopping locally, not in the big supermarket chains.
While shopping, try not to pick items packed in the single-use plastic wrapping. Yes, we’re going back to the #1 point. Did you know that 40% of plastic packaging is used only once and then goes straight to the landfill? By shopping with your own bags and avoiding plastic packaging you can make a positive change.
Try going to Starbucks with a reusable cup. Again, you can keep it in your car and whenever you feel like stopping for coffee, bring it with you! Try it once, twice, and it will get into your habit and become your best friend. 💁
Zero waste doesn’t have to mean literal zero. It’s all about trying to produce as minimal waste as possible. Any contribution helps. Zero Waste is a philosophy that encourages the redesign of resource life cycles so that all products are reused. The goal is for no trash to be sent to landfills, incinerators, or the ocean. It doesn’t mean that you have to be perfect zero waste right away. All kinds of change in your habits are awesome.
It can actually have a positive influence on your wallet and your health. Reuse anything you can and get creative. You can literally use vinegar and water to make your own all-purpose cleaning solution and put it in a reusable bottle. Cheap, zero waste, and handy.
If you’re considering going zero waste but find it difficult with your lifestyle - r e c y c l e. That’s such a little step that can make such a big difference. You gotta start somewhere.
Try to reduce the use of electricity. Middle of the day? No need to have all the lights on, right?. Open up the blinds and enjoy what yo momma earth gave ya. No need to charge your phone overnight. You can do it in an hour in the morning while you’re getting ready. Or even better just before going to sleep. There’s no excuse for having it plugged during those 6, 7, 8, or even more (lucky you) hours of sleep at night.
All in all, it’s not about being perfect, but about having a good cause in your mind. It is also all about trying. No habit was created overnight. Let yourself make mistakes. But also try, because if you won’t try you won’t know how easy it is to change your lifestyle and help the planet. And we have only one planet. Let’s appreciate it.
]]>Bali is a paradise. You don’t have to pay it a visit to know that. But if you decide to come and sightsee this heaven on earth, there’s much more than the landmarks you see in the tour guides. Why? Because each place in Bali and surrounding islands differs from one another.
The ‘island of Gods’ is not the only destination in Indonesia. There are also so many beautiful islands around Bali which are worth visiting once you’re here. That’s why here are a few beautiful places you should definitely see in and around Bali, from the point of view of the digital nomad and female solo traveler. So you know, info confirmed. 😉
Firstly, if you ask me: why Indonesia?
It all started in 2014. Two weeks in Indonesia became two months. Year after year I returned. While I sat at my desk in San Francisco, I daydreamed of the turquoise blue waters, the delicious food, and the unmatched beauty of Indonesia.
By the end of 2016, I started working remotely and was no longer confined to a desk, a city, or a country. Freedom. I bought the first flight I could to Indonesia. Let me tell you, a 60 hour work week is never fun but the sunsets, smoothie bowls, and scuba diving helped ease the pain.
I also fell in love with traditional Balinese ata bags. They not only look great but also bring me all the memories from all the beautiful places I’ve been to. That inspired me to share all the warm Bali (and not only) vibes with you. Some of the bags in my Bali collection are named after my favorite places in and around Bali.
This beautiful trio of islands - Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno is a must see once you’re in Indonesia. They are located just off the northwest coast of Lombok.
Gili means ‘small island’ in Sasak, the local language of Lombok, and not for no reason. The biggest of the islands, Gili T, is only 2.3 miles square (6km square). All together the three islands only total around 6 miles square.
Seems like not a lot? But most likely that’s why the Gilis are the top destination for those seeking for a moment of relaxation. Imagine that: no cars allowed. Only bikes and horse-drawn carts.
That is also why the white bag in Bali collection is called “Gili”. White = calm. And you can spend the day at the white sand beach and finish it off at a local cafe with a glass of your favorite wine. No pollution, no noise, only you and the beautiful lagoon blue ocean. Relaxation at its finest.
Any Eat Pray Love fans in here? If so, let’s face it. We’ve all wanted to be Julia Roberts walking down the streets of Ubud. Cycling through rice paddies and searching for balance and harmony. Are you like ‘what is she talking about?’ Here to explain: if you hear Bali and think about beautiful green rice terraces, temples surrounded by water, a jungle full of monkeys and villas with bathtubs filled with flowers - you’re thinking about Ubud.
We called our oval bag “Ubud”, and it will match any boho outfit of your choice. Ubud is literally THE place to lose yourself and find peace of mind. And to step up your Instagram game, real quick. Honestly, one day in Ubud will give you so much beautiful content. Just look at those views.
Not so popular, yet such a beautiful spot. Set amidst lush tropical valleys by Ayung River. Sayan is a jungle village a few kilometers west of previously mentioned, Bali's infamous Ubud. It might not be a typical spot you will find in Bali travel guides. But I promise, there are the views you won’t forget. Traverse the rice terraces for a beautiful sunrise.
Lounge in a quaint cafe and snack on the most delicious raw cacao treats. And get lost in the artist colonies admiring the incredible craftsmanship of the Balinese.
“Sayan” bag is our bestseller. And not for no reason - it lives up to its name.
Flores is one of Indonesia’s Lesser Sunda Islands. Located on the east of Komodo Island, it is a gateway to Komodo National Park. Flores is known for its carnivorous Komodo dragons and rich sea life, including manta rays and turtles.
Once hidden in the shadows of its famous neighbor Bali, Flores is on the map as the 'next big thing.' Soaring volcanoes hold a fuming watch over charming seaside towns. Ancient tribes keep their traditions in deep rainforest valleys.
And let's not forget about beaches of black, pink and white sands that lie waiting for the wanderers. Full of energy, charisma and plenty of shimmering sunlight, Indonesia’s “flower island” will leave you with memories you’ll carry for a lifetime.
“Flores” is another one of our bestsellers. And just like the island, it might just be the next big thing. 😉
We couldn’t NOT include a beach in our Top 7. We know you will want to end up at least for a moment doing nothing but chilling on the sand watching the ocean. That's why we present Lovina. It lies on the northwestern side of Bali.
This beach with black sand from the cooled lava of nearby Mt. Agung is low key in all the right ways. Small waves, small crowds, small towns and surrounded by seven fishing villages. It is becoming more and more popular with tourists. But it still remains far quieter than the all the hotspots of the Bali's south side. Perfect for relaxation and activities. Or taking that perfect Insta shot on the black sand.
So now you know where our black bag takes its name from. 🖤
Staying in Bali for a bit longer? Are you a typical insta girl? Or do you just enjoy a good party?
Canggu is a mecca of digital nomads, fashion bloggers and influencers visiting Bali. Not for no reason. It is full of beautiful street art, amazing brunch places and the best party spots in Bali. A bar with skateboarding bowl? - check. Most Instagrammable brunch places? - check. Day full of surfing? - check. A club overlooking the beach, or even better a club ON the beach? - check
If you’re living that digital nomad life, that’s definitely the place you want to stay. It’s full of coworking spaces and awesome cafes. You can sit all day sipping on matcha and doing your stuff online. It also has probably the fastest wifi in Bali, if that's one of your musts.
So if you’re down for good fun and meeting like-minded people, it is a place for you.
The “Canggu” bag is one of our most fashionable designs. It’s a good shopping companion and it looks awesome in all insta pics. Perfect name for the perfect bag. 😉
Dreaming of switching your phone off and just getting some rest? Seraya might be a place for you. It is a small island on the outskirts of Komodo National Park, just an hour away by boat from Labuan Bajo. The reef is in very good condition and the volume and variety of fish makes it a perfect place for snorkeling.
Calm and simple, just like our “Seraya” tote.
All in all Bali, and surrounding islands are a perfect holiday spot. I don’t need to promise. You can see it yourself. It’s definitely something to add onto your bucket list if it’s somehow still not there.
Xx Jenn

]]>Planning a flight and just can’t bear a thought of jet lag? We got your back. Here are a few tips on how to fly like a queen and beat jet lag.
]]>Sleepless nights, under eye circles, dry skin. Ughhhh, sounds like a nightmare. But if after a long flight you feel like you just want to spend the next week in bed, we are here for you. We can’t offer you a jet lag cure, but we can definitely share some tips on how to exit the plane after a long flight and feel like it was all just (a little shaky) dream.
Disclaimer. We are by no means a specialist. All advice comes straight from our personal experience, research and love of travel.
What is jet lag? While traveling long distances, our body clock becomes temporarily out of sync with the time zone we are traveling to. This means that our body expects sunset and sunrise to fall at certain times, but given the sudden change of the timezones, it gets confused. That affects not only sleep, but also body temperature, blood pressure, hormone regulation, and hunger habits. Jet lag also dehydrates us inside and that reflects in our skin.
It’s all about the prep. And you can prep your body before the flight! It might sound a little weird, but the trick is to try to live within the timezone you’re traveling to at least two days before your flight. How to prepare? Try to go to sleep and wake up at the time you would do in the new timezone. It will help your body start adjusting so the time change won’t be as extreme. Digital nomad approved. 🙋
Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. We can’t stress this one enough. Soak it up...
Flights are dehydrating for your skin. Especially the long ones. The air on board is super drying. Why? Water evaporation occurs 2.4 times faster on an airplane. This means your skin barely gets any natural hydration plus the water leaves our skin twice as fast as when we are on land.
However, it’s not the end of the world and your skin will eventually get back to its normal balance. But it’s better to do something to prevent the damage or at least to reduce the negative impact. That’s why we advise you to try a new, more hydrating skincare routine a few days before the flight. Everyone has a different skin type, so find what works best for you focusing on hydration. Here is a list of the top sustainable moisturizers.
Believe it or not, your skin knows when you’re stressed and it stresses with you. Flight-related stress can actually have a negative influence on your skin bringing on dullness and dryness. So try to relax by meditating or going for a massage. Whatever you need to do to lower stress levels before the flight.
Don’t procrastinate on packing or any other important travel related stuff. Try to organize your outfits and gear a few days before a trip so you don't leave anything to the last minute. Organization = relaxation = happy skin = beating jet lag (at least a bit 😉).
Drink your water, Sis!
According to the Aerospace Medical Association, you should drink about a glass of water (8 ounces) per every hour you're in the air. It is important to hydrate yourself, not just your skin. That is a lot of water for long flights, so get yourself an aisle seat with easy-access for bathroom breaks. Your skin and sleep routine will thank you later.
DIY airplane spa. How does it sound? We know. Lush.
Get your favorite face cosmetics in travel size + a sheet mask (sustainable, of course). We like to reserve some space for rose water and our favorite oil, gel or cream moisturizer. A sheet mask is another must-have and takes no space in the carry on. You can take a look at this list of the best sustainable sheet masks for your skin and the environment.
When you’re at least halfway through the journey and feel like you’ve seen every inflight movie, that’s the time. Grab your DIY spa and let the magic happen. It will not only keep your skin glowing but it will also keep you occupied!
If you are worried what your plane neighbor or other passengers think about you while you're rocking out full ghost mode - don’t. They won’t care. They might give you a double glance, to make sure it’s a person wearing a face mask, and not a hallucinating effect after so many hours buried in one plane seat. But the truth is no one cares. And if it makes you happy, the chances of seeing those people again are minimal. Your skin will be with you for a while. 😉 So keep it happy.
Try to sleep on the plane.
If you’re flying for ten hours or more, pack your favorite blanket, sleeping mask, and neck pillow. Download some relaxing instrumental music or white noise onto your Spotify playlist to listen to during the flight.
Why? The key factors to getting good sleep on the plane are light, temperature, and noise. We also think comfort is key. So make sure you’re in a comfy position, with your neck pillow and blanket on hand, as it tends to get cold onboard. A sleeping mask will make it feel like it’s night time. The relaxing playlist or white noise will block the sound of the engine (and your seat neighbors who decide to gossip a bit during the flight). And you’re ready to sleep through the flight. 💁
You think coffee will give you energy? No, no. It’s not your best friend. Actually the exact opposite. Caffeine can actually rob your body of its available energy reserves. Which is not ideal, especially while trying to beat jet lag. So in general, try to avoid any caffeinated and alcoholic drinks.
Follow these few steps and you will walk off of the plane a fresh-faced beauty ready to take on the day. If it all sounds a bit overwhelming, don’t worry. To sum things up it’s all about moisturizing, drinking water and relaxing. You got it.
There’s no one yet who has found a jet lag cure. While we can’t guarantee our tips will erase your jet lag, they will definitely help you feel and look more refreshed. Go ahead and give these tips a try. Nothing to lose, right?
xx Jenn
]]>Have you ever wondered where are your clothes and accessories coming from? Actually, it’s not something we think about on a daily basis, is it? Especially while we're shopping in big retail shops with the corridors full of clothes. But have you ever taken a moment to think about who made your clothes? What is their quality of life? Or if there is anything you can do to improve that quality?
There’s a chance that you’ve already heard the term ‘slow fashion’ and thought to yourself: what? Or even: so what? It’s okay. What’s important is that you have heard it, and probably more than once.
Yup. Slow fashion is slowly taking over 😉. More and more often terms like ‘slow fashion’ and ‘fast fashion’ are thankfully sneaking into our common vocabulary. But what do they actually mean? If you’re curious or just want to know why you should care about it, carry on reading.
By definition ‘slow fashion’ relates to the specific attitude towards shopping and the way decision making is done while purchasing. Slow fashion includes purchasing locally made and ethically sourced/traded products, choosing garments of higher quality that will last longer so there won’t be a need to purchase more, and rejecting characteristics proper of the ‘fast fashion’ industry.
The terms 'slow fashion' and 'fast fashion' first appeared in an article titled 'Slow Fashion' in The Ecologist in 2007. In the article, author Kate Fletcher sets fast fashion side by side with fast food. Why? To show that with lower production costs the quality of the products also decrease. ‘Fast fashion isn’t really about speed, but greed.’ Fletcher says. ‘Time is one factor of production, along with labour, capital and natural resources that get juggled and squeezed in the pursuit of maximum profits. But fast is not free. Short lead times and cheap clothes are only made possible by exploitation of labour and natural resources.’ Slow fashion comes as a counterargument to the fast fashion industry.
In the age of consumerism ‘fast fashion’ seems like the most convenient option. Mass production has been taking over more and more sectors. Especially since the publishing of Kate Fletcher’s article. We buy a lot of items during a single shopping trip, but that’s not the most important. What actually matters to us is we get it for the cheapest price. Is it good that we tend to choose lower price over quality? Don’t we miss out on something? Doesn’t it all seem too good to be true? Well, it actually is. And it’s not only the quality of products that’s under the knife. It’s the quality of someone else’s life.
While we seem to get the best deal, there are people on the other side of the thread. Working long hours for a minimal pay in poor conditions. This doesn’t sound like a fair deal. That’s when the Fair Trade arrangement came to life to improve social and environmental standards of the producers, as well as to help the makers in developing countries achieve better trading conditions.
Those terms are often used as synonyms, but do they have the same meaning? Some sources list them as exactly the same thing. Others, as a few different aspects or even branches of conscious shopping.
They all branch out from the same category but are not the same thing. You can obviously use them in any way you want. But even though those terms do overlap in their concepts, they should not really act as synonyms. Why?
Slow fashion focuses on Fair Trade and locally made products. It also puts an impact on the conditions in which the product was made, the quality of life of the makers, and the quality of the product.
Ethical fashion is an umbrella term. It describes all the products created in ethical conditions. Including not only the aspect of the makers but also if we call it ethical - the aspect of animal cruelty. So this term describes all the items sourced without any kind of harm to another living creature.
Sustainable fashion describes all the items produced from eco-friendly or recycled materials. It is also part of a bigger concept of minimalism, where the decisions are based on the purpose. It is all about the intentional promotion of the things we most value and the removal of everything that distracts us from it.
So as you see, a product can be placed within any or all of those categories. However, there are products that could fit into one of these categories but not into the others.
“Every time you spend money, you're casting a vote for the kind of world you want.” - Anna Lappe.
More and more of us read food labels before buying and consuming. If we care so much about what we put INTO our bodies, why don’t we pay more attention to what we put ON them, too? If we have the privilege to make a choice, why wouldn’t we use it? Doing research on fashion brands and their products would be a good follow up. If you don’t see any information about the product being ethically sourced, it is a good idea to Google it! It doesn’t take that long. You can also find an existing list of slow fashion brands online and use it while shopping. A little research never killed anybody. 😉
If you want to contribute to making a change but don’t have time to fully research, try to look around your town. There are definitely a few shops in your neighborhood that sell local products. Also, go further and check social media! Many communities organize markets with local goods, including clothes and accessories.
Apply the same principles to when you’re traveling! You can pack less (how? Here is an answer), and get high-quality handmade clothing and accessories from local markets. You will know where they came from, plus they are mostly inexpensive. Obviously, there are a lot of big markets selling mass-produced items, but you can usually tell if something is handmade or not. You can also talk to the vendor about the story behind the garment. If it has a story, it’s worth it, isn’t it? Plus you would wear a conversation starter everywhere you go.
Thrift shops and vintage shops are also a great alternative. A lot of preloved clothes are actually of great quality. You would never know someone had worn it before. And honestly, you can hunt a Chanel bag for ⅓ of its original price. Isn’t that tempting?
There are many great companies that work with upcycled fashion. What does that mean? It’s a creative reuse of clothes. All of the clothes that didn’t preserve well or were treated as useless or unwanted can be reconstructed or repaired and serve for another decade, two or even longer.
You don’t have to break the bank, or compromise on quality to find super cute items! So it is a win-win and a lot more sustainable than ‘fast’ trendy items that are made in poor conditions and go to waste relatively sooner after they are purchased.
We know, it all sounds a bit overwhelming, and no, you don’t have to throw away half of your wardrobe and stop shopping at your favorite retail shops right now. But putting a little thought into where your garments come from is a good start. Focus on making choices based on your conscience.
Use the above tips and making a good choice might be much easier than you expect. Also, we will be here waiting for your comments on the process and would love to see you make better choices if you share them with us through Pinterest or Instagram. We've come a long way in the past few years as consumers. We've become more aware and curious. The years of social ignorance are dwindling, which is awesome.
If you’re still asking yourself ‘why do I care?’, then think about this: The fashion industry is one of the major polluting industries in the world. If not for others, do it for the planet. We will all benefit from it.
All in all, the decision on how to shop is yours to make, but wouldn’t the world be a better place if we thought of one another? However cheesy it might sound, together we can make a difference. Your perception can make a difference. And you can start by making small but smart decisions while shopping.
Shop Jenn Lee is a slow fashion-focused business. I work with local families in Eastern Bali. This is a small community of artisans, who take great pride in creating the highest-quality ata bags. They are honored to share their craft with you. It is important to show you how the bags are made and take you (virtually 😉) to visit the families. Check the video from a visit to Eastern Bali here.
